Why does my toddler want the same rhyme over and over?
Because repetition is how they learn it, and knowing what comes next feels good. You may be bored on the twentieth round, but your child is still picking up words, sounds and timing.
What repeating does
Research on reading aloud has found that children remember new words better from hearing the same book several times than from hearing the same words spread across different books. It’s reasonable to expect something similar from a rhyme, where the words, beat and actions all come back each time.
How to stay sane
Change one thing and keep the rest. Whisper it, sing it in a robot voice, or do it with your feet. Let your child finish each line. And if you truly need a break, “one more, then the spider’s going to sleep” is an honest way to end it.
