Is the Itsy Bitsy Spider about alcoholism?
There’s no good evidence for it. The idea spreads online, but Mental Floss looked into the rhyme’s history and found no credible source for a story about drinking or for any other dark meaning.
Where the idea comes from
One story says the rhyme grew out of a song called “Tipsy Dipsy Hobo”, about drunk people climbing onto trains. Another reads the spider’s climb as a struggle with drink and poverty. These are stories told about the rhyme, and neither comes with a historical record behind it.
Why it might sound believable
The earliest known printed version, from 1910, is rougher than the one children sing today and includes the word “bloody”. That may be part of why people suspect a dark past, but rough words don’t prove a hidden meaning. Nobody knows who wrote the rhyme, so nobody can show what they meant by it.
If your child hears the rumor
An older child who brings this home from the internet has handed you a good question: how could we check that? Look for who said it first and what proof they give. For a younger child, it stays what it has always sounded like, a story about a spider, some rain and some sun.
